What thickness of foam and feather would you suggest for a modern leather sofa (seat and back cushion) that has simple lines, squared shapes yet should feel comfortable rather than the solid foam found in most commercial modern sofas in stores? I do not want the ballooning affect that occurs when overstuffed. I would like the form to be held yet relaxed if you know what I mean, not really tight especially in the back cushions. Too soften an overly stuffed foam and feather cushion would it help to cut some of the foam down an inch? Suggestions? Susan

Hi Susan, It sounds like from your note like you may have existing cushions to tweak? This can certainly be done. Generally, sofa seat cushions start at 4" and go up from there. If the cushions are stuffed too much or the existing filling is too much, you certainly can shave the foam down. I would start with 1" as you asked (good guess) and restuff from there. If the existing is too stiff, you may want to buy different foam and wrap with existing down and covers. It may be a trial and error system to get what you want. The backrest foam is generally softer (or it should be) than the seats. Again, try the same technique with the backs. Since I cannot feel the foam and down wraps, I am not sure what they are doing exactly but it sounds like either making the foam core smaller or buying some softer foam for the cores all together. I do alot of different types and firmnesses of foams. If you need a quote please email me personally so it won't be shared with others. Thanks and I hope this helps Jen

Have you ever used 1545 foam? Also if I had a piece of 1845 foam and a piece of 1833 foam side by side, how could I tell the difference to label them correctly.

Hi Boat man, I have never used a 1500 series foam. The quality (15) is considered an "OK" quality and my clientele usually needs something more than that. It may be a challenge to differentiate between the two since they are so close in qualities (denoted by the 18) but the 1833 should feel a bit softer when compressed. The 45 should feel firmer. It may take a few tries to distinguish this. Foams do come in different colors but this is not always a tell tale sign. Thanks for asking Jen
